Ethiopia has launched construction of a new international airport project as part of its strategy to position itself as Africa’s largest aviation hub. The project, backed by the federal government and key aviation stakeholders, is expected to significantly expand the country’s passenger and cargo handling capacity over the coming decades.
The new airport is intended to complement and eventually relieve Addis Ababa Bole International Airport, which has been operating near full capacity amid strong growth in passenger traffic. Ethiopia’s aviation sector, anchored by Ethiopian Airlines, has expanded rapidly in recent years, turning Addis Ababa into one of the continent’s busiest air transport nodes.
Authorities say the airport has been designed with long-term growth in mind, featuring multiple runways, large terminal facilities, and modern logistics infrastructure. Once completed, it is expected to handle tens of millions of passengers annually, making it the largest airport in Africa by capacity.
The project aligns with Ethiopia’s broader economic development agenda, which prioritizes transport, trade facilitation, and logistics as key growth drivers. By strengthening its aviation infrastructure, the country aims to attract more international airlines, boost tourism, and reinforce its role as a gateway between Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.
Construction of the new airport is also expected to create thousands of jobs during both the building and operational phases, while supporting Ethiopian Airlines’ long-term expansion plans as one of the world’s fastest-growing carriers.
