The United Arab Emirates has unveiled a $1 billion “AI for Development” initiative aimed at boosting artificial intelligence infrastructure and adoption across Africa. The announcement was made during the G20 Summit in Johannesburg, underscoring the UAE’s growing role in global digital development efforts.

The program will be implemented by the Abu Dhabi Exports Office (ADEX), an arm of the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, in collaboration with the UAE Foreign Aid Agency. It is designed to support African governments and institutions in deploying AI to advance key sectors including healthcare, education, agriculture, climate resilience, and digital identity systems.

According to UAE officials, the initiative will focus on expanding digital infrastructure, increasing access to computing power, and providing technical expertise to help African countries integrate AI into essential public services. The UAE says the goal is to ensure that “no country is left behind in the AI era.”

Africa currently accounts for a small share of global AI investment, and the initiative is expected to help unlock significant potential by enabling countries to adopt modern digital technologies. Industry estimates indicate the African AI market could reach $4.5 billion in 2025, driven by increasing demand for data-driven services across both public and private sectors.

The UAE framed the initiative as part of its broader strategy to support emerging markets while strengthening economic and technological ties with African nations. The country has become an increasingly active investor across the continent, backing projects in renewable energy, logistics, healthcare, education, and strategic minerals.

Officials say the new AI fund will promote inclusive development by helping African nations modernize service delivery, build digital capacity, and strengthen resilience against climate-related challenges. However, its long-term impact will depend on strong local partnerships, regulatory readiness, and the ability of countries to sustain advanced digital infrastructure.

The $1 billion commitment marks one of the most significant AI-focused development efforts in Africa to date, positioning the UAE as a key partner in the continent’s digital transformation.
