Norwegian developer Empower New Energy is scaling up its commercial solar power model across North Africa through a series of strategic partnerships and investments.
Empower New Energy has teamed up with Tunisia’s AR Solaire and Leoni Tunisia, a subsidiary of the German automotive cable manufacturer Leoni Group, to develop a portfolio of ten rooftop and ground-mounted solar power installations. The initiative is expected to help Leoni cut its electricity costs by 40%, generating an estimated US$9 million in savings over the lifetime of the projects.
The company is also broadening its regional footprint with new ventures in Egypt and Morocco. In Egypt, Empower recently signed a US$50 million agreement with Engazaat to finance a 40-megawatt solar portfolio, while in Morocco, it is developing a 5.8-megawatt project for the Saray Immo Group.
Empower New Energy has already been active in Tunisia, where it collaborated with Indigo Renewables on a 948-kilowatt rooftop solar project at the Mall of Sousse. The installation is expected to generate about 1,400 megawatt-hours of clean electricity per year and offset over 1,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually.
The company’s business model combines financing, engineering, and operational management, offering a full-service approach to solar deployment for industrial and commercial clients. Empower emphasizes local partnerships and blended financing structures to drive the transition toward affordable and sustainable energy in emerging markets.
With operations also extending into Kenya and Nigeria, Empower New Energy continues to position itself as a key player in Africa’s shift toward renewable energy, addressing the challenges of high power costs and unreliable grid supply across the continent.
