A new digital platform has been launched to monitor Africa’s ambitious effort to bring electricity to 300 million people by 2030.
The Mission 300 Progress Portal, developed under the World Bank–supported Mission 300 initiative, provides real-time updates on electrification projects across the continent. It tracks three main indicators: people already connected, those to be connected through approved projects, and those targeted under projects still in preparation.
Since July 2023, when results tracking began, over 32 million Africans have gained electricity access through 84 projects across 39 countries. This pace is 1.5 times faster than previous years, signaling growing momentum toward the 2030 goal.
The World Bank has committed $8.5 billion to the Mission 300 initiative, alongside $1.2 billion in co-financing from development partners such as the European Investment Bank, which pledged $377 million.
According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), Africa will need around $150 billion by 2035 to achieve universal electricity access. The new portal seeks to improve transparency, help governments and partners track progress, and guide funding toward regions most in need.
Beyond tracking numbers, the platform highlights the transformative role of electrification in driving social and economic development—powering schools, hospitals, and small businesses across both rural and urban areas.
